How to Determine if a Scratch is Through to the Basecoat
We often receive estimate requests for scratches on panels (i.e. fenders, doors, trunks or hoods) without any attached photos. Inevitably, we respond with the request to send along photos of the scratch to firstname.lastname@example.org. Truth be told however, it is very difficult to assess whether a scratch is through to the basecoat just by looking at a picture. The following is a description of two simple methods to help you determine whether a scratch is through to the basecoat.
There are a couple of ways to determine whether a scratch is through to the basecoat. One way is to drag your fingernail across the scratch. If it "catches," then it's most likely through to the basecoat, and would require painting or touch up. Another way is to wipe the scratch with alcohol. If the scratch disappears momentarily, then we can most likely remove the scratch utilizing our scratch repair system.
Either way, our trained technicians can repair any scratches you may have, whether utilizing our scratch removal system or by repainting. It really comes down to how much you want to spend. Since our prices are typically a fraction of the cost of an auto body shop, you receive value in either instance!
Try it out for yourself before sending along a photo. That way, we can provide you with the most accurate estimate possible.
